what about Medicare?

Medicare Australia provides a rebate for many medical consultation items, as a taxpayer-funded contribution towards the cost of your healthcare. Most Australian citizens and permanent residents qualify for this rebate, as well as visiting citizens from countries that have a reciprocal healthcare agreement with Australia.

In order to claim your rebate, you must bring your current Medicare card and your EFTPOS/debit card with you to the practice. We can approve the rebate for most consultation items on the spot, via our HICAPS terminal. The Medicare rebate is then deposited immediately into your cheque or savings account.

Some items and combinations of items are not able to be claimed via our HICAPS terminal, as they need to be verified by a Medicare agent prior to payment. In these cases, you will need to:

  • visit a Medicare office, or

  • complete a mail-in Medicare claim form, or

  • submit your own claim online via

our COVID-19 response

Updated 23 March 2020

We know that many of you are feeling a general sense of anxiety over the uncertainties the new coronavirus brings. Here at Woollahra Doctors, we are transitioning to a primarily Telehealth-based model in order to minimise unnecessary social contact.

For all consultation requests, please call 02 9328 7766 or email and we will be in touch with a consultation time. Prepayment is required for all Telehealth consultations, and there may or may not be a Medicare rebate available for your consultation.

Prescription and referral requests can be made via email to There is a $40 charge for this service, although please be aware the doctor may require a Telehealth consultation to complete the request. We can forward your prescription(s) to your preferred pharmacy for dispensing. We urge you to defer any non-essential specialist appointments for the foreseeable future.

We do encourage appointments for child immunisations and necessary health checks that may be due. Please be assured we are maintaining a sterile environment in our practice. All patients who enter our premises will be pre-screened for temperature/unwell symptoms before being allowed to come in.

for appointment times

When you call us to make an appointment, we will ask if you are experiencing any flu-like symptoms (high temperature, cough or breathing difficulties), even mild. This is so we can ensure appropriate separation and cleaning between patients.

This may mean less choice in appointment times and also an increase in our normally minimal wait time, but is necessary to minimise your health risks and those of our other patients.

Call 02 9328 7766 or email to schedule a consultation.

Telephone or FaceTime consultations

If your medical need is something that can be readily diagnosed in a visual format (ie rashes, conjunctivitis, mild allergic reactions, baby feeding issues) then we can schedule a telemedicine consultation at a regular appointment time. Some patients may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for telemedicine.

As COVID-19 becomes more widespread, we will make telemedicine consultations available for a broader range of clinical questions.

Home visits for existing at-risk patients

Daytime home visits are available for existing patients who are at infection risk in the community. including those aged over 80, and patients with significant chronic health problems such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hepatitis B, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney diseases, and cancer. Please call us if you fall into this category and would like to arrange an in-home consultation. After-hours home visits are available through our deputising service by calling
